Rioja is the oldest Denomination of Origin in Spain (1925) and the first to obtain certification (1991). Murillo de Río Leza is a small village in the autonomous community of La Rioja in Northern Spain nestled between the Rivers Jubera and Leza, at an altitude of 407 metres and located 14 kilometres from Logroño.

The Mediterranean climate, a well-distributed low level of annual rainfall, and rainfed cultivation make Murillo an ideal location for cultivation of the vine, with the low annual levels of rainfall providing a natural stressor for the grapes producing a product of maximum quality.

San Esteban winery is the first cooperative winery from the DOCa. Rioja, established in 1953 by its 16 original members.

Presently it is made up of 350 members that cultivate more than 500 hectares of premium vineyard. The original concrete winery had a capacity of 2,000,000 litres, constructed according to local requirements of the time. In the 80s, the winery was expanded and modernized with a vinification area incorporating stainless steel deposits with a capacity of 1,500,000 litres, which is used to this day to store fine wine.

In the year 2000, the winery invested in an extensive enlargement incorporating a production area with a capacity of 5,300,000 litres, a space for Crianza in barrel and a production and bottling unit. In the same year, the iconic Tierras de Murillo line was born.

This phenomenal winery has achieved a consolidated commercial network in recent years, and Tierras de Murillo continues to impress consumers worldwide.
